Chincoteague Island …
… to home.
Knowing that our drive home wasn’t a tremendously long one we spent some time in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge after checking out our inn.
Richard had read that there was a specific type of squirrel (Delmarva Fox Squirrel) here on the island that I simply had to find! And, of course, we were hoping to see more horses as that’s the main reason for coming to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.
We didn’t see all that many horses as we drove into the refuge but we weren’t going to give up hope. When we arrived at the refuge we found a nice walking trail in the hopes of seeing some squirrels (and horses). We definitely saw some squirrels on what would end up to be a 2.5 mile walk! I have a picture of one in my collage … bottom right. BTW: The Bald Eagle seen in the upper right had just stolen a fish from an Osprey!
We still hadn’t seen many horses but our time was getting short before we had to leave for home. But then as we were driving out of the wildlife refuge what would we see?!? Lots of horses! And, thankfully, they weren’t too far off the road for us to get some decent enough pictures. It was delightful.
We spent some time here photographing these beautiful horses before heading out … homeward bound.
Our trip home was a little longer than expected due to some traffic issues … and Richard would end up doing all the driving. Which made me feel terrible. We were home shortly before 5pm.
Even though we were unable to take the vacation that we originally planned to Lake Lure we really had a wonderful time on this impromptu vacation to Virginia Beach and Chincoteague/Assateague Islands. And I’m so grateful that we had safe travels the entire trip.
Total miles driven: 1,185 miles.
Backblipped: November 25 ... and it's about time!
