Not to be denied -- I returned to the scene of the flat and redid my ride.  Thank you REI for having the last set of tires that fit  my bike and to Dave - my husband and manservant:) - who reinstalled the tires last night in a cold garage.  I had the trail to myself, except for a couple of bird photographers and a large gaggle of wild turkeys who protested my presence.
