(330) Plane Sailing
Most of my collection of power tools just allow me to do a job that I could do with manual tools but with less effort and/or more quickly, but the power planer allows me to do things that I just couldn't accomplish with a traditional plane as I do not have the necessary skill.
Today's project was to construct an indoor storage unit for firewood using whatever timber I had lying around. I had some 45 x 45 green-treated rough sawn timber that would be fine for corner posts, but it really was rough. Enter the power-planer. With the cut depth set to 0.8mm, two passes on each face, and a 45 degree chamfer on each edge, produced four nicely smoothed pieces that would look more at home indoors. Another half hour with the reciprocating saw, nail gun, drill, and impact driver, and the job is done.
Sticking with the technology theme, I published another flying camera video to YouTube today. It's only just over a minute in length because, on the day, the wind was so strong that I didn't really think I'd even be able to fly at all. In the event, I did manage a quick ascent from a lay-by and a couple of photo and video captures with the Air 3, which copes with high winds much better than the Mini 3 Pro. The Air 3 also has the advantage of a twin-lens camera, hence the closer view of the breaking waves in the video.
Music tonight is from a relatively obscure 'neo-prog' band called IQ, who first formed in 1981. Although the band have never enjoyed major commercial success and had several lineup changes, IQ have built up a loyal following over the years and are still active as of 2024. I first discovered the band courtesy of an algorithm that presented me with a selection of live performances from the last ten years and which I enjoyed. Having then explored earlier material/recordings, I'm not so impressed with Peter Nicholl's voice from earlier years and I think he sounds so much better in later years.
