The essence of Christmas

Love them or hate them, sprouts on a stalk taste totally different from the regular boring green balls that have become the butt of festive jokes.

When I used to go on a bridge course over Christmas, my reply to the “dietary requirements” question was always, “extra sprouts please.” It usually backfired. My friend , her mother and I invariably ended up on a table with fellow sprout lovers and we had to share. 

Sprouts on a stalk used to be a Waitrose speciality.

I would protest at the prices. Over £1.00 !! 

Well, this year, they’re early and Waitrose are charging £2.25. 

Of course I’ve succumbed, twice.  They are outside my door, getting the required frosting (yesterday was perfect).

One of my favourite dishes is very simple.  Prepare some pasta. Cook the sprouts, possibly with an onion, or maybe prawns. Serve it and enjoy, ideally with a chilled Lugana…..

But Waitrose have competition.

Lidl have sprouts on a stalk for 99p.  Whatever is the world coming to !!!!
