Salzburg
Today we took the train from Munich to Salzburg. Although we caught a fairly early train it was absolutely packed. Luckily we'd arrived early enough to get a couple of seats together, from which we could enjoy the snowy countryside.
When we arrived, we walked from the station to the Old Town, crossing over the river. We were quickly able to deduce why the train had been so crowded: the Christmas markets were in full swing!
The Minx had done her research as usual, and guided us to the funicular railway that takes its passengers up to Festung Hohensalzburg, the medieval fortress that overlooks the city. Although it has obviously been updated in the last five centuries, the line is thought to be the oldest operational railway in the world.
At the top we enjoyed a glass of Glühwein, whilst taking in the views, and then we walked around the fortress. I love a good museum and this one is particularly well done.
After that, we found a little restaurant for a bite to eat and followed that with a mooch around the markets and a couple of bars before walking back to the station. I must say there was a dearth of great bars but we ended up in a tiny one populated by some older guys watching sport. It probably wouldn't have been my first choice but actually I really liked it.
And following the trip back to Munich, we went out for dinner to a little Tapas place that the Minx had found called El Perro. It was a terrific spot, comfortably full, and serving great food.
Once we'd eaten, the manager joined us for a couple of shots of Mari Mayans Hierbas Ibicencas, which I've never had before, but she seemed keen we try it, and I loved it.
