Stair rods

I often wonder where some of our expressians originated. We continue to have beautiful weather and some exotic heavy rain. Well it is exotic for the west of Scotland to have heavy rain which is not horizontal.

That brings me back to the expression "stair rods" of rain. I took this with the iPhone and it was slow enough to capture what I wanted. The rain was coming down in straight vertical streams. If you look lcosely you will see what I mean.

Why would a stair rod be associated with rain ?
