Candlelit?
With thanks to my brother and his wife we were treated to a concert in St Giles. Rachmaninov piano concerto no 2 and the Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
The interior of St Giles was splendid. The candle light was, shall I say, underwhelming. Two stands with some 35 tea lights on each did not to my mind a candlelit concert make.
Nevertheless, the music was great. The Rachmaninov, while very enjoyable, did not quite hit the mark despite the performances of the sinfonietta. It needed a fuller orchestra with the piano more dominant.
The Vivaldi on the other hand was superb with the lead violinist, Victoria Lyon, putting on a virtuoso display. Really enjoyable despite the cooling temperature in the cathedral.
It has been a while since I’ve been to a concert of classical music (as opposed to a recital). I’m not quite sure when it became the custom to applaud after every movement - or at one point during a movement. The Insta age I suppose.
A quick trip afterwards to see the city lights made for a lovely evening.
