Visiting Alfred
Journey's end - Statue of King Alfred in the centre of Winchester.
Over the past weeks, a friend and I have nibbled away at sections of the cycle & walking route known as King Alfred's Way. Although circular, this route is intended to start in Winchester; being local and regular riders to Winchester, we started a few miles to the West and today we rode the official route from Cheriton, taking an alternative cross-country route back to our start point.
Overall it's been great, and quite a challenge at this time of year. It is billed as a gravel bike route and although that's what I used (CX bike for the precise), I'd recommend a mountain bike. Some parts are very muddy and there are plenty of sections that are very bumpy - experienced gravel riders might be ok, but MTB riders can enjoy more comfort and survive with fewer skills.
Whichever - it has a wide range of terrain and some stunning scenery. Allow 3 or more days to properly appreciate it.
