Mr Dynamite!
Tuesday
Another cold grey day. We went down to Music Live at Lunch at Christ Church Cathedral downtown, where the artists were Queen City Klezmorin, who we heard last year, a group of five experienced musicians specializing in traditional Klezmer and Yiddish music. Klezmer originated in Eastern European countries like Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus, where it was played at weddings, religious celebrations and other communal events. It was almost wiped out by World War II but was revived in the 1970’s by Jewish folk musicians in America. Today’s ensemble consisted of piano, violin, clarinet, percussion and voice. The music can be soulful or lively toe-tapping music - very appropriate for this time of year.
On our way home we made a slight detour to find one of Cincinnati’s many murals for me to blip. We pass this one often, when we are going to Music Hall, but either it’s dark, or we don’t have time to stop. Its title is Mr. dynamite, and refers to James Brown, American singer, dancer and musician, who was regarded as one of the most iconic and influential musicians of the 20th century, in the fields of funk, soul and hip-hop. His connection to Cincinnati is that he spent the formative years of his career on the Cincinnati - based King Records label. The mural was painted in 2015 by artist Jenny Ustick as part of the ArtWorks organisation.
In the afternoon I finished decorating our larger real tree in the living room, and spent some time playing carols at the piano.
In the evening we watched the first episode in a Netflix miniseries on the racing driver Ayrton Senna - you can guess who wanted to watch that! Having said that, I was quite a willing spectator - I could always have taken myself off to another part of the house!
