Lunch with Alzheimer's Research
Robin and I were invited to Oxford Uni by Alzheimer’s Research UK in Oxford along with several other fundraisers in the Thames Valley Network. It was such an interesting and uplifting experience. We had a talk from a senior research fellow who is investigating ways to boost resilience to Alzheimer’s by identifying the proteins that are most important for protecting nerve cells from damage.
A second talk was from a PhD student whose project focuses on the use of multi-omic data and machine learning to understand cognitive resilience in Alzheimer’s Disease. She also joined her boyfriend and his brother to run the length of the UK to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Unfortunately the siblings have inherited the faulty gene for early on-set frontotemporal dementia but they do amazing work raising the profile of dementia and fundraising and that 900 mile run has raised over quarter of a million pounds.
During lunch we talked to several scientists who are working on cures for dementia and came away feeling really positive about the work being done but also with our eyes opened to how much more work could be done with increased funding.
Our little Crimbletown project is just a drop in the ocean but everyone was very positive about what a difference the small fundraising efforts can make.
