Murdering Freedom, or The Colonels

Painted by Greek artist Yannis Gaitis in 1968, this was part of a fascinating art exhibition at the National Gallery (Athens) called Democracy. The exhibition explores artistic responses to the struggles against authoritarian rule and pursuit of democracy in 1960s and 1970s Greece, Spain and Portugal. It marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece after the overthrow of the 7-year military dictatorship known as The Colonels in 1974.
