Sgwarnog: In the Field

High

The river was running high under the green bridge as I walked across to Thackley for some football.

Further rain set in while I was en route, so I was checking on my phone every five minutes to check that the match wasn’t called off at the last minute.

The game did take place, in very challenging conditions, with the pitch holding up well but getting steadily boggier as the game went on. Some forking of puddles was required at half time.

An early flurry of goals saw Thackley Ladies establish a 3-0 lead over north Leeds’ Republica Internationale. The third went down as an assist to the wind, with a gust taking the ball into the net direct from a corner. Thereafter Thackley continued to control the game, but a combination of the woodwork and some fine goalkeeping meant that no further goals were added.  They remain top of the West Riding County WFL D1 with eleven wins from eleven games.

As I was coming back over I learned that 17yo was en route to hospital with a nasty cut to her finger, picked up while ice skating. She had it cleaned up, bound and x-rayed, but has to go back on Monday morning for stitches and whatever else may need doing. It’s a bit early to say what the damage is, but not something you want to happen.

Finally, many thanks for all the warm greetings on my blip day yesterday.
