Passion flower

In South America in the 15th century, Spanish Christian missionaries found symbolic references in the passion fruit flower to the death of Jesus. Other cultures have seen a symbolic clock-face in the flower. As always, Wikipedia has the full story.

I photographed this flower today on a very vigorous vine in our village garden, just under our balcony.
