Platter

Doing a bit of pre-Christmas tidying and it’s finally time to get rid of a collection of old computer hard drives that I’ve collected over the past 30 years. I did a bit of research on how to destroy them properly. First step was taking them apart. This is the inside of one of the oldest. It was interesting to see how they changed internally over the years - the platters (the part that contains the data) got considerably thinner over the years but also all the other mechanical components got smaller and simpler. Some platters in the old drives were held on with six screws, compared to a single, much smaller screw in a newer drive. Of course even the newer drives are dinosaurs compared to the solid state drives.

Had roofers thumping around all day. Not sure Jaffa ever stopped barking at them.
