Open
I love being somewhere rural, with open space and long views to distant hills. I have sketched this view a few times - my drawing is pretty rusty, not that it was ever brilliant, but it's fun to try again - and I'm trying to capture photos of it through the seasons. Unfortunately, this open space is under threat. A local housing agency has applied to build 26 properties here, which would entirely block the view towards the hills. I would still see about 2/3 of the big tree but that's about it!
The land they plan to build on is outside our town's flood defences, and therefore could be at risk of flooding. It would make those of us living at the edge of town feel hemmed in, rather than enjoying the feeling of being rural. There is great biodiversity here too, which would be destroyed if the land was built on. Nowhere have I ever encountered so many different types of bugs! If they get approval, it will be a very sad day.
Until then, I will enjoy the view in the hope that the council will see sense and refuse permission to build here. I will watch how the colours change with the seasons - bright greens, reds and yellows, fading to pastel colours as Christmas draws near. And I will watch for the buds come springtime, the hope of new life.
