Sheep Dip
A quick snap of the Book Club books before I take them back to the library. Melvyn Bragg's daughter has written a beautiful but harrowing story of Lake District sheep farming life. She covers the huge loss of young men in the first world war, the rural traditions and the insidious sheep dip chemicals that were forced on the farmers without knowledge of the harmful effects on people. Organophosphates were finally banned in 1999. The story will be the same for sheep farmers all over the country.
