A bit of history in Leith

Over to Leith for a pre-Christmas meet up and present swap with our friends Amber and John, which took place over a nice lunch at Cafe Truva on The Shore.

Once we had said our goodbyes (Amber was working), we had a wander round old Leith, where I blipped St. Ninians church and manse. The building is a rare and particularly old example of a clerical dwelling associated with an urban church. With origins dating back to 1493, it is thought to be the oldest building in Leith and is topped by Edinburgh’s sole surviving 17th-century steeple (1675). The site’s 19th-century conversion to a granary and then mill reflects Leith’s industrial development, just as its abandonment during the mid-20thcentury reflects this industry’s demise.

However, thankfully, between 1996 and 2002 the building was refurbished and turned into offices (which I worked in for a brief period nearly 25 years ago!).

A fun day, but it’s nice to be back home relaxing.

Have a nice Saturday.
