The Cold Shoulder
Bobby gave me the cold shoulder this morning when I scolded him about his behavior at the Back Porch Cafe! Cheeky fellow! My nice neighbor is coming over soon to chop ice and hopefully retrieve the feeding tray. He will also bring in the new bag of sunflower seeds waiting in the trunk of the car so we can be back to service as usual. I'm always interested in the origin of words and phrases. The first recorded use of the expression was in 1816 by Sir Walter Scott in the Scots language, in The Antiquary. "Ye may mind that the Countess's dislike did na gang farther at first than just shewing o' the cauld shouther". So now you know!
