The Gesualdo Six sing Jingle Bells as an encore
Several friends involved with the St Laurence church project urged me to go to a concert there performed by the Gesualdo Six, a celebrated ensemble of choral singers. The Friday evening performance was to be the start of a weekend workshop they were running at the local Hawkwood College, with many of the participants in the audience.
The church was packed and very appreciative of the beautiful voices, the phrasing and the repertoire, which given the date included a couple of carols. I was mesmerised and will listen to much more of their recorded material. During a gap between songs, their director Owain Park, who sings their bass parts, joked that Stroud was the third place in their current tour, having recently played in Shanghai and Singapore in the last couple of weeks.
I got permission from the organisers of the concert to take a few pictures, and managed to get a seat in the central aisle. It meant that my range of views was limited as was the lighting. I only grabbed a few frames at a couple of odd moments during the songs so that I didn’t disturb the audience too much.
I hope there’ll be more chances to hear them live, as that must be the best way to hear them perform the music they obviously love so much.
I must add that the short interview I blipped about last week was finally posted on the Stroud Times website, with a link to it as a YouTube video:
