Same view, different place
Was woken at around 2am by some bizarre noises that sounded very close to the van......I lie awake trying to figure whether it could be a kiwi......I didn't think so. A possum maybe? A little more likely though this area seems to be well 'trapped' so maybe not. A wild pig? A goat? I had no idea but I eventually drifted back to sleep. At 4am I was woken by a more familiar screeching......I'm pretty sure it/they were kea but I didn't gather my thoughts quickly enough to attempt any identification by was of recording the sound. Again, the noise sounded very close to the van. I considered getting up at this stage but didn't. When I did waken a few hours later the sun was glorious and the mountaintops clear. Stunning day and an easy decision to stay for another day in this lovely spot.
Walk today was along the walkway to the other end of the beach then back along the beach. A very 'nice' walk that took me past more old rusty dredging machinery that a bygone era had discarded, peeved maybe that it didn't yield the volumes of gold they'd hoped it would dredge from the area. Some of the pieces were huge and I wondered how on earth they'd moved such pieces of cast iron to the site. I wondered where it had come from and I wondered about the men who would have sold their lives to find gold in this remote, somewhat inhospitable region, as it would have been over a hundred and thirty years ago.
