Canberra's Sistine Chapel
The Free Serbian Orthodox Church of St George in Forrest was built by its parishioners. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with murals, all painted by one man, Karl George Matzek, over a period of about 16 years. The church is sometimes called 'Canberra's Sistine Chapel'. A tad smaller though. Matzek was about 76 when he started work and kept painting until his death aged 93.
Sadly the church was closed when we got there, so we didn't get to see the paintings. They are on the list for our next trip to Canberra.
