Horsepower
Two kinds! I love seeing the Amish riding around town in their buggies. This man was heading to the hardware store. Of course, we use the term "horsepower" for cars too, but I wasn't sure when it started. Apparently, the term was adopted in the late 18th century by Scottish engineer James Watt to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses. It was later expanded to include the output power of other power-generating machinery such as piston engines, turbines, and electric motors. Basically, it was a marketing ploy to entice farmers to give up their real horses for his mechanical ones. Interesting.
