Small Bomb
All the excitement was over before I got there. Darn it. What kind of photojournalist am I, then? Anyway a little while before, down the road a piece, a very loud bang could be heard from the back of a recycling truck, followed immediately by flames, smoke and exterior flaking paint. By that stage, the truck was immediately outside my brother's house where, in order to avoid a major fire, the driver had been instructed by radio to run his vehicle forward while tipping up the barrel, thus dumping his load as a 20 metre long string of rubbish ... all over the street.
Police arrived and the fire brigade arrived, along with a crowd, followed eventually by a front end loader .... whereupon yours truly finally woke up and staggered down to the foot path to see the mess being cleared away.
Evidently someone had decided to "recycle" a faulty lithium ion battery by dropping it in a yellow bin. Upon being collected by the truck, the battery landed with a jolt and exploded. Mind you, a glance at the rubbish composition reveals how few people understand what can be placed in a yellow bin. One problem reveals another.
