The Parvis Room
I was in Ludlow today and visited St Laurence's Church, quite a regular stop off for me because it is so impressive.
For the first time I got to see the Parvis Room which I did not previously know about.
It was fascinating.
Accessed by a very narrow and steep spiral stairway it is above the porch and mirrors the hexagonal floor plan of the porch. It was used in the 16th century by the Deacons of the church and then later turned into a library.
Not normally open to the public I was given access by a kindly steward and spent quite a long time perusing the plain leaded windows, the traces of ancient paintings on the walls and the memorial stones set into the floor.
A wonderful distraction and much needed.
The 'Christmas Decorations' in and around Ludlow are a great disappointment and unworthy of photographs. As is the tree in Castle Square. A dismal attempt by the authorities to 'cheer the place up'
My extra shows some more of the church interior. It is majestic.
