In Los Llanos

Today we went by bus to Los Llanos, the second city on the island. A mostly rainy day with some sunshine in between. A nice place with some lovely houses and balconies. Of course lots of Christmas decorations everywhere.

We walked the streets in the centre and shot lots of photos. We had a look at the church, saw plenty of murals and started our day by seeing the local archeologic museum.

This little museum is actually very interesting. It tells the history of the benahoaritas, the indigenous people of La Palma, or Benahoare. They probably arrived in the third century BC (from Africa? no one knows) and were conquered by the Spanish conquestadores in the 15th century. They were mostly killed or enslaved and soon forgotten. The benahoaritas dwelled mostly in caves but also in some stone settlements. Hunting, gathering plants, keeping goats and pigs etc. Like prehistory in our part of the world. A worthwhile visit.
