Press Crossing

This area was traditionally called Mount Horeb, but at the turn of the 20th century, a fellow named Pressley Carter gave his name to this railroad crossing which became known as Press Switch and the surrounding area as the Press Community. A little piece down the road was another small community known as Decoy. There used to be a Post Office at Decoy, and a General Store: both are long gone.

Just behind where I took this picture is a community building that has been used as a church and a school. My grandmother and all her siblings and her numerous cousins went to school there around 1910 on. The present building, though only goes back to the 1940s. Every year, cousins, friends and neighbors of the Press Community gather for a Homecoming -- lots of country home cooking and good fellowship. This year cousins came from as far as Wyoming and New Mexico. The Press Homecoming has been going on for over 70 years -- since before I was born! Many family members from my g-g-grandparents on down are buried at Christian Cemetery, including my late grandmother.
