Classic beauty

I passed this lovely Georgian door on the way to work this morning, so well-cared for and pleasant.

Doors are important, they are portals. I have always felt that they are the main problem with modern architecture. The architects only care about how a building looks from a distance. In reality, we mainly see buildings close up, and the entry is usually what we are looking for, so it should be properly and invitingly marked.

Worst possible example in Edinburgh is Appleton Tower. Just try to find the way in some time. That building's entire interface with the street is a complete failure, killing all enjoyment of the street for an entire city block.

Should be torn down.
