Bridge of Alvah
A pleasant, though muddy, walk through the grounds of Duff House to the massive Bridge of Alvah. In the early 19th century Duff House grounds were said to contain at least one example of every tree species known in the British Isles including an elusive Monkey Puzzle tree presented to the 4th Earl of Fife by the Argentinian soldier Josè de san Martin who had fought alongside the Earl in the Napoleonic Wars.
The massively elegant Bridge of Alvah consists of a single arch spanning a deep gorge on the River Deveron. It was built in 1772 to link family property on either side of the Deveron. There is a 'secret' room in the bridge - thought to have been used by the toll collector or for secret liaisons by the Earl of Fife.
From the bridge there are spectacular views down to the river 55 feet below (see extra)
