Courtesy of Quora: The name "Bournemouth" originates from the confluence of the River Bourne and the Old English word "mūþ," meaning "mouth." Thus, "Bournemouth" essentially means "the mouth of the Bourne." The river itself is thought to have been named after the Celtic word for "stream" or "river." The area developed significantly in the 19th century as a seaside resort, and the name has remained ever since.
