Farringdon Station

The only famous or important building in my One Street is "Farringdon Station". It's both a tube station and a main line station. It opened in 1863 as "Farringdon Street", the terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the first "tube" line in London, and celebrated its 150th birthday in January. This is the second station building on the site. It was opened in 1922 as the newly renamed "Farringdon & High Holborn Station" (as you can see in the lettering at the top).

Those of you who knew Cowcross Street in previous lives will remember a rather dingier building than this one. The station was cleaned and repaired as part of the renovation for the improved Thameslink train line. The old façade hides a building site as the station is rebuilt and extended for the much longer and more frequent trains that are stopping here.

Trains go to Luton Airport to the north and Gatwick Airport to the south. They also go to King's Cross that links to the Eurostar at St Pancras International with fast trains to Paris and Brussels, and the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. So if you want to get out of London, this is the place to live!

The kiosk on the left that you can see the back of belongs to Tony, who's had a kiosk there for as long as anyone can remember. He's a third or fourth generation Italian immigrant, together with lots of other people round here, as it used to be called "Little Italy".
