Peddling
A grand day out spent over the border in Salzburg today.
It was small compense for the cancelled 4 day excursion to Austria originally planned, before the car got an "ouwa footie" (a damaged tyre that can’t be replaced until mid January!). Much as we thought we could chance the journey into the avalanche ridden depths of Austria with a repaired tyre, we wisely decided to wimp out of doing battle with the autobahns and inner country ice rinks.
The train from Munich to Salzburg was stuffed full of the noisy comers and goers of the respective cities; as was Salzburg’s main train station when we arrived an hour and a bit later.
The weather was cold and sunny which cast a lovely strong winter light over the southerly facing walls, providing good contrast with the shadowed north faces.
At times we followed the crowds and the familiar routes from our previous visits to the popular spots. But our more rewarding experiences came by trying to avoid the human herds and ducking up or down the smaller lanes and pathways of the old town below the south western ramparts. Parts of this area (along the Steingasse) gave me an impression of the narrow cobbled streets with buildings built into the rock as can be seen around Edinburgh Castle mixed with a good daub of an old Italian hill mounted town.
A normal delay at Freilassing (the first train stop between Salzburg and Munich) on our return to German soil, as the border police wandered through the carriages checking passports and asking "illegal entry" type questions.
Was nice to get home tho’, back to our little beast.
