A Gallop Home
The fog finally lifted this morning just in time for our journey home.
My main Blip shows Epsom Racecourse and its stands from about the 7th furlong mark. It has been the home of the Derby since 1779. I actually worked there for the 200th Derby in 1979. I have no idea why the red roses were fixed to the bench.
In Extras I have added an image of the jockey's view as they race the final couple of furlongs.
Also there is a couple of views from our hotel window. As you can see it over looked the run-off section just after the finishing line. In the left hand image you might make out the skyline of the City of London. London sits in a basin and the North and South Downs looks down on it. My misty golf image the other day should have had the city behind it.
My final extra is of an old Coal Tax Post next to the course. Coal tax became payable at these points and had been collected for over 300 years but was abolished within 30 years of these posts being erected. These taxes were last collected in 1890. This post is a short distance away from where the memorial plaque is for the suffragette Emily Davison who stepped in front of the King's horse in 1913.
Our journey home was uneventful and only took 4.5hrs!
