OUR NATIONAL SYMBOL
Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)....once quite endangered by the use of the insecticide DDT, the eagle has made a remarkable comeback since banning the chemical and it now has a conservation status of Least Concern.
~
A big bird, 7-14 pounds (3-6kg) with a wing span of 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4m). It dines primarily on fish but will scavenge if the opportunity presents itself...especially true in winter when waters may be frozen over.

This one lives at the zoo in Milwaukee. I have a long lens and when I'm seen in the stands during a free-flight show they always invite me to come to the stage afterwards and get as close to the bird as it will allow. This is to accustom the bird to the presence of cameras and long lenses so that they do not get frightened and fly off during the free-flight demonstration.
