Great Northern Diver

Normally, I wouldn't venture to the north isles at this time of year due to the very short days which means you go out and return in darkness and also will have quite a wait when it is too dark for seeing wildlife or taking photos, but a smew has turned up on Westray so I went over. The weather forecast was of frequent wintry showers and they turned up. I cycled up to Loch of Burness and spotted the drake smew quite far off. Only a very poor record shot though. Still, my first in Orkney, and first drake anywhere. I cycled along to Pierowall harbour to warm up/dry off in the waiting room there and saw this diver sail past the window. Another shot has it with a crab.
