Under the radar
Today I had a long awaited appointment at the specialist MODY clinic at Addenbrookes. It was quite emotional and I cried!
I have been diabetic for nearly 50 years and after the first diagnosis (aged 14) I have never ever talked to someone who knew more about my condition than I did, apart from my Mum.
A bit of recent history here.
Today I learned that it is highly likely I can come off insulin, but that the trust won't pay for a continuous glucose monitor to facilitate this. It's a regional health trust decision/line in the sand, which costs me £100 month (double if you count my offering to pay for Ben's monitoring too). But, those are the rules in Cambridgeshire. I can't blame the penniless NHS.
But discovering I could be free from injections - wow - such a lot has been learned and such a lot has changed since I was diagnosed. As I've been so sensible and tried so hard to keep my sugars under control I was never made aware of alternative treatments. Now I am, it’s a tablet instead of injections, but it feels it could be life changing! My Mum, so concerned and guilt ridden all her life about my inheriting this from her, would never have believed this was possible.
Onwards and upwards!
