The Dump…Landfill……Resource Recovery Center
Our local disposal area is about five miles north of town, up the coast and nestled in beautiful rolling hills with a killer view of the ocean. It truly is an amazing piece of real estate if you overlook the fact that it is actually a mound of garbage. We had a pickup truck load of trimmings from yesterday’s gardening marathon. It fell to Mr S to empty the truck, after I determined that the pitchfork was much too heavy and awkward compared to my camera. The view below these seagulls is of a huge pit of trash that is being constantly added to and rearranged by giant bulldozers. It is dusty and smelly and there is a continual high level of bird noise, crows, I think, or blackbirds. It isn’t pleasant, but it is remarkable that this place has existed for so many many years. Over 50 that I know about, going back to the days when a family of human scavengers lived in trailers around the edge of the pit and culled the good stuff for re-use or resale.
