Tough cookie

I saw this beauty running down the middle of the road to get his breakfast back this morning. I’m wondering if he dropped the squirrel and then the squirrel got hit by a car, but still can’t figure out why he was actually running rather than swooping down. He was obviously determined to carry it off so I put my flashers on and stopped traffic (ok, one other car:) and made sure he got off into the brush before I left. The hawk didn’t seem to be injured or to have been hit, as once he got the squirrel up he flew off with no trouble.
