Australian Bustard (Ardeotis australis)

It's taken me 3 years to get a photo of one of these birds, since I first saw one on a back road between Mount Surprise and Tully on the Queensland coast.
Seen several this year alongside the road, but no chance of stopping, especially when we are travelling at 100kph, and there is a road train right behind us!! (A road train is a truck with 2 or 3 trailers. )
This morning, I spotted two of the birds in a area by the side of road, where there were piles of gravel for roadworks. PJ went up the road a bit, before finding a place to turn around. The birds were still there when we got back. I wasn't going to miss out on a photo, just because the sun was on the other side of them. So got a few shots, but they took off out into the paddock before I could get myself into a better position for the light. As they took off, I suddenly realised that there were 3 of them, but I hadn't seen the third.
They were just inside the paddock as we returned from fossicking this afternoon. PJ stopped again, but as I tried getting closer to them, the grass is so dry, that it was cracking under my feet, as if I was walking on dry twigs, not grass. They quickly decided it was time to start walking away from me.
This morning we had woken to the sound of 2 horses running past our campervan. Looked outside, and one was standing between the gate posts, with its breath vapourising in the cool morning air, and the dust around it being turned into a golden haze by the sun coming up. Leap out of bed, rushed to get camera, but the horses were heading off into the paddock by the time I got back. Yes, still in my nightdress, but it would have been worth it.
