Ground Doves
We see two types of doves here in North Central Florida; Mourning Doves and Ground Doves. The Mourning Dove is the larger and longer-tailed of the two and is common throughout North America from Southern Canada to Panama, including the Caribbean. It makes a rather sad cooing sound, hence its name.
Then there's the Common Ground Dove. It is tiny, compared to the Mourning Dove, and sports a square-tipped tail and a 'scaly' feather pattern on its neck and breast. It's common from the southern U.S. to southeast Brazil. These photos are of a pair of Ground Doves that frequent our tray feeder. They throughly enjoy the millet in our seed mixture.
