Cycling to Sandwood Bay

The great weather continues in Sutherland.

This morning we walked the short Ceannabeinne Township Trail and learnt more about the way of life in the highlands in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the highland clearances (here the highlanders "won"), and the local wildlife. There were also spectacular coastal views from the site. Then we pootled along to Smoo Cave and paid £4 each for a short and interesting trip by boat into the caverns.

By lunchtime there was wall to wall blue sky and sunshine - just perfect for a trip to Sandwood Bay.

We last took the 4.5 mile path to the bay with our single bikes about 15 years ago. This time it was the tandem's turn. We actually ended up part-walking the route because there are a number of culverts built across the track to help drainage from the hills into the lochs along the walk. You could probably jump most of them on a single mountain bike, but this manoeuvre would be somewhat dangerous on a longer vehicle. In my blip you can see Mr hazelh pushing the tandem along towards the bay.

Exercise today - approximately 9 miles of cycling and walking.
