Ramekins
These ramekins were M's Christmas gift to me. Their bases bear the makers' marks, respectively, David and Hermia Boyd, and D + H Boyd.
David Boyd is a member of the Australian artistic Boyd dynasty, the most well known of which is his older brother the painter Arthur Boyd.
David (1924-2011) was a talented artist in several media and for a period during his career pottery was his main interest. In 1948 he married the equally talented Hermia Lloyd-Jones (1931-2000), also a potter. Between 1950 and 1968 they had potteries in Sydney and London in which they collaborated to produce a range of earthenware pieces comprising both sets of domestic ware, including my ramekins, and individual art objects.
The ramekins are thin and therefore light. The sgraffito design on the outside and the contrasting soft eggshell glaze on the inside give them an elegance and a delicacy. What a great gift. They won't be going in the dishwasher.
Thanks for hosting Laurie.
