You learn something new everyday.
Well maybe not everyday or even most days but you learn something new some days. My son works in the airline business and what started out as a conversation about pivot tables in Microsoft Excel ended up talking about aircraft that have their own stairs. The pivot table conversation turned to a program called Power BI which analyses data. He said if there is a fault with the airstairs on a Boeing 737 it is analysed by Power BI and the appropriate action is taken for the effect this has on operations. I didn't realise that the Boeing 737 had its own stairs.
Airstairs come with significant advantages when it comes to smaller airports, but potential cost savings risk being offset by increased weight.
There are quite a few advantages to having airstairs:
They help with fast passenger turnarounds
They are helpful at airports that have limited mobile stairs or rural landing field
They allow passengers to board and disembark the plane without the need for airport ground staff help.
The disadvantages of airstairs are:
They can sometimes malfunction or become stuck
They need to be maintained
They add weight to the plane, which affects fuel consumption
