Before supermarkets.

Barnstaple has been a market town for many hundreds of years, with local farmers bringing their meat, crops, vegetables and fruit to the town for sale on certain days.
In 1855 the Pannier Market was built to enhance this, with nearby Butchers Row being designated for the sale of meat.
Changing shopping habits now see the market used to sell clothing, books, shoes, artisan cheese etc.
The low viewpoint was rather undignified. One passerby actually asked me if I'd been photographing my nuts. Hopefully said in jest.

Many thanks to Laurie for hosting mono Monday.
