125 years have passed since this silver watch was hallmarked in Chester in 1899 and it is over 107 years since it was last worn.  It belonged to S’s grandfather, a Marine Engineer, who was drowned when his ship was torpedoed off the Yorkshire coast in 1917, leaving three young children, including S’s father who was just 2.  The watch still works.
