Mallory's boot
I drove up to Rheged this morning to see the Everest Exhibition. It was well presented and gave an insight into the early attempts to map and climb the mountain. There has long been a debate as to whether Mallory and Irvine completed the first ascent in 1924 as sadly neither returned and Mallory's camera has yet to be found. Some years ago one of Mallory's boots was found and just last November one of Sandy Irvine's boots was also discovered. I would love to think that they did reach the summit.
The exhibition brought back many fond memories of my two treks to Everest however I did not get beyond base camp.
One interesting fact that was new to me was that the name Everest was a mistake. The original surveyor's name was George Eve-Rest which at some point became contracted to Everest. These days the mountain is often referred to using the local names Sagamartha or Chomolungma.
