tempus fugit

You want fresh?

This is Gerald. He's an organic vegetable grower who stepped in about 18 months ago to sell his produce at the town's weekly market. (Blipped here)

Footfall at the market (which received its charter in 1836 but was probably going long before then) has been dwindling of late, which endangers its very existence since sellers make less profit and may decide it's not worth their while. Along with others I've been trying to promote the market, via social media mostly,  to encourage people to come along. Some can't get to it on a weekday of course but many others appear not even to be aware of it. One woman responded that she's lived here for seven years and never knew it existed, in fact she's never even been into the Town Hall where the market is held.

I've been taking photographs of, and chatting with, the stall holders: the tea lady, the butchers, the egg woman and the Syrian former-refugee who sells homemade Middle Eastern snacks and products. And Gerald. He loves coming here he said, for the sense of community and being able to sell his veg direct to the customers, many of who have been coming to the market for years. (He's a Welsh speaker too so you can use or practice the language when you're chatting.)
He sells apple juice and honey as well as veg straight outta the ground and today he told us that, because his Landrover is off the road, he used his tractor to get here - about 12 miles - it's out the back, he said.
And so it was.
