George Stephenson's Cottage
Good to be able to get out for walks again after the recent cold snap. A walk by the River Tyne at Wylam today. Enroute we passed renowned engineer George Stephenson's birthplace.
This is where he was born in 1781. The cottage at that time was divided into four tenements and George and his family lived in one room Outside was the wooden waggon way where horses pulled wagons of coal from the local colliery. He lived there until he was eight years old.
George went on to invent The Rocket (a steam powered locomotive) which very definitely changed the world. Hard to believe that he came from such humble beginnings.
