La Fraternité
The full moon is making the night sky an icy blue. I'm sitting right up next to the fire and am finding it hard to imagine the summer days when the named jumped out of the Mill window into the canal and, by so doing became Members of the Fraternité du Béal.
I can remember each jump; the cautious, the headstrong. Pheobe perched on the edge of the windowsill repeating 'oh my godohmygodohmygod' before we gave up on her at which point she jumped and we missed everything but the splash. Leila was similar, having never jumped off anything higher than a low river bank, she trembled on the ledge, goaded on by the boys beneath and finally took the leap.
Tonight the canal is silver with moon shine and bitterly cold.
