Colourful sky

There have been some spectacular sunrises here recently and I have been trying different techniques to photograph them. The main problem is the very large difference between the brightest and darkest parts of the scene - frequently more than the camera is capable of recording accurately. The extra is an extreme example, looking directly at the red sun, just above the horizon. I thought that in-camera high dynamic range might work but the result looks unnatural to me.
