What should we be concerned about?

This photo is part of a batch I shot today for an article on genetically modified crops. I haven't been caught up in the genetic modification issues since for most modifications I don't see much of a problem. Genetic engineering of crop plants has been going on for thousands of years. There are 3 issues controlling genetic modification of food and feed plants:

1. Profit and control of market. Large companies use genetic engineering to control market share and increase profits.
2. Cost savings. Farmers and growers realize greater profit from disease-resistance, for example, in the use of less chemical herbicides & pesticides and labor for application and management of crops.
3. Genetic "spillover" into other plants via cross pollination. How will a certain modification affect other beneficial plants and non-beneficial plants (weeds).

I think the genetic modification issue with regards to human health is low on the priority list since we all eat genetically modified food crops every day and have been, as a species, for millennia. I believe the issue with genetic modification is not that it's being done, but how. Traditional manipulations occurred through selective breeding over many generations of plant lines. Today, insertion and swapping of genetic material directly into plant emryos is possible, reducing the time required in selective breeding. It's the "Playing God" syndrom that people get worried about. The technology is and has been transferred to humans, so where does the manipulation stop? But, that's not an accurate comparison, only a conspiracy theorists Pandora's Box.
